BRITISH SCIENCE WEEK March 2024

The whole school celebrated British Science Week from 11th to 15th March, the theme of which this year was Time. Children took part in different experiments, linked to either their current Science topic or the theme of time. They were also asked to enter a national poster competition.

In Nursery, children learnt about oral health and decay over time.

Reception children made sand timers using recycled bottles, and although they were unable to experiment with them as planned, they had fun with the construction!

Year 1 children conducted an investigation into animal ‘scats’ to travel back in time and find out what the animals had eaten.  Although somewhat dubious at first, once reassured that the scats were not real the children thoroughly enjoyed dissecting them to discover the clues within.

Year 2 had a very busy week! They completed a decomposition experiment to find out which food rots quicker, a cheeseburger or fruit. They also investigated the shape of eggshells and how much weight they can withstand to protect the offspring they contain, and launched rockets using coke and mentos, changing the speed of the air escaping.

Year 3 children investigated shadows, including how and why they are formed, and how they change throughout the day.

Year 4 children designed a boat out of card or paper which would float for a certain amount of time. The children worked well together to design and fold the boats, and most of them floated and didn't have any holes for the water to enter. They then discussed why certain objects float or sink.

Year 5 explored the science of air resistance, creating their own paper aeroplanes and working collaboratively to explore how the flight and travel of their plane is affected by air resistance. The children thoroughly enjoyed trialling and testing their creations in addition to then making adaptations / alterations to their structures to see what impact these would have.

Year 5 also worked incredibly hard on their individual poster entries for British Science week. The year 5 team were blown away by their creativity in addition to the enthusiasm they all showed when conducting their research beforehand to help them decide on what the focus of their poster would be.

Many other children also entered the competition, making judging the winners very difficult.  Our Warren winners were Emily in 1S in the Year 1 - 3 category, and Scarlett, Janis, Daniel and Thomas in 5F in the Year 4 – 6 category.  These have been entered into the national competition, so fingers crossed for our Warren entries!
