YEAR 5

Spring 1:

This half term, we have been reading the book ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. The children have all enjoyed the adventures of Liam, a twelve-year-old boy who goes on a trip to space without the knowledge of his parents. This has given us some wonderful opportunities for creative writing, producing brochures for Infinity Park, writing letters home to his parents and describing deep space to name but a few.

In Science, we have been looking at space as a whole and why certain aspects of life are possible. We have looked at what the moon does for Earth and its importance alongside how our orbit causes the different seasons. This has been a thrilling topic to teach and one that the children have really run with.

In Art, we have been looking at Cityscapes, focusing on the artist David Hockney. This was a tricky concept to get our heads around but the children have all faced this head on and should be really proud of all their hard work.

Autumn 2:

In Computing, we have been looking at how we can keep ourselves safe online by attending the Walk Online Roadshow. All of the children were impeccably behaved and engaged throughout. Even the adults learnt a thing or two, and were made to feel incredibly old!

In Science, we have been investigating materials and their properties. The children had the opportunity to see how milk is transformed into butter. Although it was a stinky, sticky lesson, all of the children loved seeing the process and the fruits of their labour!

In Year 5, we have a new set of statutory spellings that we would like the children to learn. These are spellings that are expected to be known by the end of Year 6, however we will be looking at these in class and would love for you to try and help your child in learning these.

Autumn 1:

So far this term, we have been hard at work getting to grips with all things Year 5! In art, we have been looking at graffiti and how this can be displayed as artwork. We have all attempted to write our names in this style, and we are amazed by the results. Here are just a selection of our wonderful pieces. We also created our own self-portraits, with half of our face showing us how the world sees us and the other showing what is most important to us. This gave us a great insight into the children, and we have loved finding out more about them as people.

As well as this, we will be looking at the Vikings, and studying how art was an important part of their culture. We look forward to showing you how much we have learnt around this soon.

We have also been studying mountains in Geography; looking at how they are formed and what impact humans have on these areas.
