Year 1

This half term Year 1 have been showing their artistic talents. In our Art lessons, they learnt all about primary and secondary colours and how the artist Piet Mondrian used them in his work.

The children loved making their own artwork inspired by Mondrian and mixing their own colours.

They were also encouraged to explore how to create different shades of colour by adding small amounts of black or white. It has been wonderful to see them grow as artists, and we cannot wait to see what they create next!

Year 1 went on our very first school trip this week! This half term, we are learning about the seasons, so we walked to Chafford Gorge to see all the signs of Autumn. We were very lucky with the weather and the children had a great time sketching the trees and wildlife. They noticed the autumn colours of the leaves and how the trees were even starting to lose their colourful coverings. We are so proud of how well the children behaved on their first outing and we hope to have many more trips in the future. We would also like to thank all the parents who came along to help – we could not have done it without you all!

This half term Year 1 started their first Design and Technology project. They were challenged to create their own superhero cape. All the children made a design plan then transferred and enlarged it onto their fabric. Our final step was to evaluate our creations and think about the changes they made. The children were proud of their work and we were delighted to see all their creative designs. What a great first half term we have had in Year 1 – Well done everyone!

Year 1 have really enjoyed their first Forest School sessions of the year! We had lots of fun climbing trees, cooking in the mud kitchen, digging and creating our own obstacle courses. Mrs Summers had also found us lots of natural objects for us to create our own Forest Faces with!

We are very impressed with the way the children have come back to school and settled into Year 1. They are getting used to the new expectations, rules and routines and are trying hard with the work. One of the lessons the children have enjoyed is Science, in which they are learning about the senses. We have been on a listening walk, staying very quiet to listen for all the sounds we could hear in the environment. The children found also out what it would be like without their sense of sight by shutting their eyes and trusting a partner to lead them around.
