Sign Language Week 2026

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone involved in making Sign Language Week such a memorable and inspiring success. Our deaf pupils and staff were absolutely fantastic, and the week was filled with rich opportunities for pupils, staff, and parents to use and celebrate their BSL skills.
The week began with a whole‑school Q&A session led by an expert panel. Mr Clifford and Mrs Lawrence (Level 6—the highest BSL qualification), Mrs Campbell ( level 4 and active in the deaf community ) , and our Level 1 pupil ambassadors Sarah and Chloe engaged confidently with the audience and helped deepen everyone’s understanding of Deaf culture and communication. It was wonderful to see our weekly lessons, taught by native BSL user Mrs Beaney, truly come to life as pupils applied their learning in real-time.
A special thank you goes to our YR 6 House Captains and Deaf Ambassadors—Sarah, Chloe, and Taaliah—who took on the role of event coordinators for the Fingerspelling Challenge. They organised the resources, managed the competition, and motivated pupils across the school to take part with great enthusiasm. Their leadership and enthusiasm made a huge difference. Our deaf pupils enjoyed additional Deaf community art sessions, where they created personalised bunting—beautiful pieces that captured both creativity and identity.
Parents and carers also joined in the fun, taking on the challenge of fingerspelling their own names to earn house points for their children. It was wonderful to see such strong community involvement.
Overall, the week was a true celebration of inclusion, language, and community pride. Thank you again to everyone who contributed. We are incredibly proud of our pupils, staff, and families for embracing BSL and making this week so special.
Keep signing.
