Year 2 Pupil Reuben Shines in BBC 500 Words Competition

A talented young storyteller from Year 2 has captured the imagination of judges in the prestigious BBC 500 Words competition, earning a place in the next round.
The BBC 500 Words contest, the UK’s largest children’s writing competition, invites pupils aged 5–11 to craft short stories of up to 500 words. Each year, thousands of entries are received from across the country, making Reuben’s success a remarkable achievement.
📚 A Story That Stood Out
Reuben’s entry, The Lion Who Was Afraid to Roar!, tells the uplifting tale of Leo, a young lion cub who lives with his grandparents in a colourful jungle. Although Leo loves racing with friends and exploring, he hides a secret — he’s too nervous to roar. At Lion School, his kind teacher Roary encourages him gently, while classmates cheer him on with smiles and support. With courage and friendship, Leo slowly finds his voice. By the time he grows older, he is full of confidence, roaring proudly in class 6Roar. The story’s message about bravery, encouragement, and believing in yourself resonated strongly with judges.
🌍 National Recognition
The BBC 500 Words competition has been running since 2011 and is supported by well-known authors, broadcasters, and celebrities. Reuben’s progression to the next round means his story will now be considered alongside other outstanding entries from across the UK.
